Job Overview:
A Parsippany, NJ-based law firm seeks an experienced Patent Advisor to bolster its expanding intellectual property group. This role offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of science and law, supporting patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and innovation protection, primarily within the life sciences domain. The advisor will collaborate with legal teams across various practice areas and industries, contributing to high-level IP strategies and operations. A specialized legal recruiting agency conducts this search on behalf of the law firm.

Duties:

• Analyze new inventions for patent potential across diverse technological domains

• Draft, prepare, and submit patent applications in the U.S.

• Manage patent prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

• Coordinate with international agents for foreign patent filings and prosecution

• Contribute to intellectual property audits, diligence efforts, and portfolio evaluations

• Conduct in-depth technical and legal research related to patentability and IP protections

• Partner with attorneys, inventors, and corporate stakeholders to shape IP strategies

• Serve as a bridge between scientific innovation and legal protection efforts

Requirements:

• Minimum of 4 years of experience managing patent matters in a law firm or corporate IP department

• Specialized expertise in biotech, pharmaceuticals, or medical device patent prosecution

• Demonstrated ability to independently draft and prosecute patent applications

• Experience with additional technology domains (e.g., mechanical or electrical devices) is beneficial

Education:

• Ph.D. in life sciences, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related field

Certifications:

• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or eligible to take the registration exam soon

Skills:

• In-depth understanding of life sciences technologies and scientific principles

• Excellent analytical and research capabilities

• Effective communicator with the ability to distill complex technical ideas into actionable legal insights

• Collaborative mindset and ability to contribute to cross-functional teams
