A law firm in Ann Arbor, MI, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tax Litigation Attorney to join its team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in tax court litigation and extensive civil tax controversy experience, including a background in both federal and state courts. This role requires managing complex litigation cases, developing client relationships, and demonstrating exceptional attention to detail.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax litigation matters before federal and state courts.
  • Handle refund litigation and other civil tax controversy cases.
  • Develop and implement strategies for effective case management and resolution.
  • Prepare and present arguments, motions, and briefs in tax court.
  • Conducted legal research and drafted legal documents related to tax litigation.
  • Manage client relationships, including regular communication and updates on case progress.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys and support staff.
  • Maintained and managed case files, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
  • Develop new business opportunities and expand the firm's client base.
  • Meet multiple project deadlines while maintaining high responsiveness and quality of work.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys and departments to ensure comprehensive legal services.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation, focusing on civil tax controversy.
  • Experience in refund litigation matters is highly desirable.
  • Previous work with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop business, including a portable business book with growth potential.
  • Strong management skills, with the ability to supervise client contact and lead cases.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, capable of handling multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Outstanding customer/client service skills and attention to detail.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is required.
