Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm based in West Hartford, CT is seeking a seasoned Patent Agent to enhance its Intellectual Property group. This strategic role involves collaborating closely with legal professionals and clients on high-value IP matters, particularly within the life sciences domain. The selected candidate will contribute to safeguarding scientific innovation through nuanced patent prosecution, research, and portfolio development initiatives.

Duties:

• Analyze new inventions for potential intellectual property protection across diverse scientific fields

• Prepare, draft, and file patent applications with U.S. regulatory authorities

• Manage domestic patent prosecution and coordinate with international partners on global filings

• Conduct intellectual property due diligence in support of business transactions and R&D initiatives

• Research legal and scientific literature to provide insight on patentability and freedom-to-operate concerns

• Advise on the structuring, maintenance, and strategic development of IP portfolios

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on innovation protection strategies

• Serve as an interface between legal teams and external counsel on complex patent matters

Requirements:

• Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution, particularly within life sciences

• Background in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical technology is strongly preferred

• Familiarity with either mechanical or electrical patent subject matter is beneficial

• Demonstrated ability to engage with technically complex subject matter and convey findings to legal audiences

• Strong analytical and communication skills to support interdisciplinary teamwork

Education:

• Ph.D. in a life sciences field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related discipline

Certifications:

• Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (or eligibility to sit for the exam shortly)

Skills:

• In-depth understanding of scientific innovation and the patenting process

• Technical writing proficiency for patent claims and supporting documentation

• Collaborative mindset with the ability to contribute to cross-functional legal and scientific teams
