Job Overview:

Duties:

  • Lead and manage family law cases including contested divorce, child custody, DHR defense, and adoption.
  • Draft and prepare pleadings, discovery, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct client meetings, providing legal advice and recommending strategies.
  • Delegate tasks and manage internal and external deadlines for legal staff.
  • Represent clients at trials, depositions, mediations, and hearings.
  • Participate in post-judgment litigation and appellate matters when applicable.
  • Handle significant research and writing projects, including appeals.
  • Manage a demanding caseload while balancing priorities and maintaining client relationships.
  • Maintain a high level of client communication throughout case proceedings.

Requirements:

  • Experience in family law, including contested divorce, child custody, DHR defense, and adoption cases.
  • Proven experience as lead counsel in at least 10 contested family law trials.
  • Experience with party depositions, specifically at least 5 where the candidate has deposed the opposing party.
  • Strong research and writing experience, with at least 3 significant research projects, especially in appeals.
  • Experience with family law mediations, specifically at least 3 significant mediations lasting half a day or longer.
  • Ability to manage a high caseload with deadlines and production targets.
  • Willingness to work beyond regular office hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong courtroom presence and the ability to provide clients with confidence during challenging proceedings.
  • Proficient with case management systems such as Clio, as well as Google Docs, Word, Gmail, and online legal research tools (Westlaw, Lexis Nexis).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and legal staff in a fast-paced, solution-oriented environment.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active Bar membership in the state of Alabama (or ability to become licensed in Alabama).

Skills:

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent trial preparation and courtroom litigation skills.
  • Ability to conduct depositions and lead mediation sessions.
