Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent with a background in Biological Sciences to join its team. The position will involve drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting patent validity and non-infringement analyses, and engaging in IP due diligence and post-grant proceedings. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies in the life sciences, including gene editing, cellular therapies, antibody-based therapeutics, and molecular diagnostics. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience in patent prosecution, along with strong communication skills and a passion for teamwork and client interaction.

Location:

  • Pittsburgh, PA

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the biological sciences field
  • Conduct patent validity, non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate analyses
  • Perform IP due diligence, patent litigations, and post-grant proceedings (IPR, PGR, interferences)
  • Handle other IP matters related to life sciences technologies such as gene editing, cellular therapies, and molecular diagnostics
  • Collaborate with clients and team members on strategic IP matters
  • Assist in managing IP portfolios for clients in the life sciences sector

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of substantive patent experience (3-5 years preferred)
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred, or M.S. with several years of industry experience) in biological sciences (e.g., Biology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Virology)
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong academic background and the ability to manage significant responsibility
  • Team-oriented with a strong desire for client interaction and collaboration

Education:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Biological Sciences (or equivalent industry experience)

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent prosecution and IP analysis
  • Strong knowledge of biological sciences and cutting-edge technologies in the life sciences
  • Superior writing and communication skills
  • Ability to manage complex IP matters in the biological sciences space
