A law firm in Sacramento, CA, is seeking an Environmental and Water Law Associate Attorney with 3+ years of experience. The ideal candidate will have experience working with public sector clients such as cities, counties, and special districts, with a strong understanding of the Brown Act, Public Records Act, and Conflicts of Interest. The role involves assisting in litigation preparation, conducting legal research, drafting pleadings and discovery materials, and providing legal advice on environmental and water law matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and analysis on environmental and water law issues, including regulatory compliance, land use, and water rights.
  • Assist in the preparation of discovery requests, responses, and pleadings for litigation or adversarial proceedings at state administrative agencies such as the State Water Resources Control Board.
  • Draft a variety of legal documents, including client memorandums, briefs, motions, and other pleadings for adversarial proceedings.
  • Manage and respond to written discovery requests under limited supervision.
  • Interface directly with clients, providing legal counsel and maintaining professional relationships while addressing both legal and strategic issues in environmental and water law matters.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the California State Bar in good standing.
  • 3+ years of experience practicing law with a focus on environmental and/or water law matters, preferably representing public and/or private clients.
  • Strong knowledge of the Brown Act, Public Records Act, Conflicts of Interest, and other relevant laws and regulations.
  • Experience with litigation preparation and administrative proceedings before state agencies.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills, with the ability to draft clear and persuasive legal documents.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
