A law firm is currently looking for a Patent Agent/Technical Advisor to join their dynamic team. The ideal candidate will bring substantial industry experience in engineering fields such as material, chemical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering, along with a strong background in patent counseling and prosecution. This role involves working on complex technologies, assisting patent attorneys, and contributing to various stages of patent application processes.

Duties:

  • Conduct patentability and freedom to operate analyses through prior art database searches
  • Assist patent attorneys with patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation by analyzing scientific and patent documents
  • Draft patent applications and prepare responses to office actions
  • Collaborate with team members to support complex technical and legal matters
  • Maintain strong communication with clients, providing updates and addressing concerns

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience at a law firm, with a focus on patent prosecution and counseling
  • Industry experience in chemical engineering, material science, or a related engineering field
  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical and/or biomedical engineering concepts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in English
  • Strong initiative, ability to learn quickly, and work well in a collaborative environment
  • Registered as a U.S. Patent Agent or eligible to take the USPTO registration exam
  • Ability to meet requirements for registration as a patent agent

Education:

  • A degree in material, chemical, mechanical, biomedical engineering, or a related field
  • Advanced degrees are preferred, but not required

Certifications:

  • U.S. Patent Agent Registration or eligibility to sit for the USPTO registration exam

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent search databases and patent law procedures
  • Strong technical analysis and problem-solving abilities
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage complex documentation
  • Proficient in drafting clear and concise patent applications
  • Capable of collaborating with diverse teams of attorneys and technical experts
