A law firm seeks a Tax Controversy Associate to join its team in Washington, DC. This role is ideal for an attorney with extensive experience in tax disputes and a keen interest in representing clients in high-stakes tax controversies. The position offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated matters involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the United States Tax Court.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax disputes before the IRS, DOJ, and Tax Court.
  • Analyze complex tax issues and develop legal strategies to resolve disputes.
  • Draft persuasive legal documents, including memoranda, briefs, and correspondence.
  • Conduct thorough research on tax laws, regulations, and precedents.
  • Provide strategic advice to clients on resolving audits, appeals, and litigation.
  • Present oral arguments and advocate on behalf of clients in hearings and court proceedings.

Requirements:

  • 4–6 years (classes 2019–2021) of substantive experience in tax controversy or closely related areas.
  • Previous work experience with the IRS, DOJ, or Tax Court is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex tax matters with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in oral advocacy.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Advanced tax law coursework or an LL.M. in Taxation is preferred but not required.

Certifications:

  • Active bar membership and in good standing with the bar of any U.S. state (DC preferred or eligibility for admission without examination).

Skills:

  • Proficiency in navigating the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury Regulations, and related case law.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills for handling multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Keen attention to detail in analyzing legal and factual issues.
