Job Overview:
A prominent law firm is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Associate with expertise in software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering to join its Intellectual Property group. The firm provides patent services to a diverse clientele, focusing on patent applications, patentability opinions, patent estate management, and licensing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned patent practitioners in a collaborative environment.

Location:

Duties:

  • Manage high-level and strategic aspects of multiple legal matters at various stages, from inception to conclusion.
  • Communicate effectively with attorneys and clients, ensuring clear and professional correspondence.
  • Work independently while producing high-quality legal work and meeting billing requirements for excellent client service.
  • Contribute to business generation efforts through both individual and group initiatives.
  • Comply with the highest ethical standards within the legal profession.
  • Maintain responsibility for managing business and generating new business opportunities.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience as a licensed attorney, preferably at a law firm.
  • Experience with patent preparation and prosecution, specifically in software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical areas.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and prioritize tasks effectively.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
  • Bachelor’s or higher in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science preferred.

Certifications:

  • Must be licensed to practice law in one or more jurisdictions where the firm conducts business.
  • Must maintain applicable license renewals and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
  • Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) required.

Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, for internal and external client interaction.
  • Demonstrated decision-making capabilities, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lead and delegate within client teams.
  • Eagerness to embrace continuous learning, new technologies, and mastery of intellectual property law.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, beginning to lead matters.
