Job Overview:

A law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a skilled Patent Agent to support its patent prosecution practice. The ideal candidate will assist clients in protecting their technology by drafting and prosecuting patent applications through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and supporting due diligence efforts. This role requires a strong background in the sciences, excellent time management skills, and the ability to effectively handle multiple assignments from partners and clients.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Conduct thorough patent searches and prepare detailed reports.
  • Assist with patent-related due diligence, including reviewing and analyzing patent portfolios.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand their technology and business needs.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to develop patent strategies and resolve issues.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple assignments from various partners and clients.
  • Prepare and file responses to office actions and other USPTO communications.

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of experience in patent prosecution or a related field.
  • Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO (Patent Bar eligibility required).
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to meet and manage deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Patent Bar eligible.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution processes and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
