A law firm in Boston, MA, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Patent Associate Attorney to provide patent prosecution services primarily in software and electronics across various industries. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields, along with hands-on experience in U.S. and foreign patent prosecution. Familiarity with health and medicine is a plus, and the position requires exceptional organizational and communication skills, along with a strategic approach to managing complex intellectual property matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle all aspects of U.S. and foreign patent prosecution for software and electronics IP.
  • Draft and file patent applications and responses to office actions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent offices.
  • Conduct patentability assessments and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Provide strategic advice to clients on patent portfolio development and management.
  • Perform legal research and draft legal documents related to patent prosecution, enforcement, and potential litigation.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their innovative technologies and provide tailored IP solutions.
  • Stay updated on industry trends in software, electronics, and IP law to ensure the firm offers leading-edge services.
  • Assist with due diligence for IP transactions and patent litigation support as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and patent examiners to resolve legal issues.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of patent prosecution experience, with a focus on software and electronics IP.
  • Familiarity with health and medicine IP is a plus.
  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) registration is required.
  • Prior law firm experience is mandatory.
  • Industry work experience is preferred.
  • Experience with patent litigation is a plus.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Admission to the State Bar (MA preferred) or ability to become admitted within a reasonable time frame.
