Practicing in Silicon Valley
California's Silicon Valley has no strict geographic definitions, but it's more than a state of mind-it's a state of income. People come here to get rich; those who go broke have to leave. Long-time residents used to lament the disappearance of apricot and cherry orchards-and homes for under $100,000-in sunny Santa Clara Valley. Now locals reminisce about the money that used to grow on dot-com trees and starter homes that sold for under a million.
Yet in an area that prides itself on moving information at the speed of light, there's no sense of being mired in the past-just in the gnarled traffic that snakes its way around the leafy eastern and southern suburbs of San Francisco, through big-city wannabe San Jose and over the hills to Santa Cruz. Arriving lawyers can look ahead to helping newly minted Google millionaires spend their fortunes, managing Oracle's PeopleSoft takeover, and venturing optimists' capital. Just as the rain here proves every winter, there's still green in them thar hills.
HOT TICKETS
A surprising number of fine arts lovers still make the hourlong freeway trek to San Francisco, but the San Francisco Symphony also has a mini-season at the Flint Center in Cupertino (home of Apple), and the San Jose Opera has a jewel of an auditorium. Music hipsters also tend to go to S.F. for their fixes, but over-40s who like cabernet with their concerts find their favorite artists at the outdoor Mountain Winery in Saratoga.
HOT RESTAURANTS
Parcel 104 has an unlikely setting-the Marriott in Santa Clara-but chef Bradley Ogden (who also operates the upscale Lark Creek Inn chain) has created a place for hushed conversations, marked by "wows" when the artfully presented Franco-Californian fare arrives. Some might think power breakfasts at Il Fornaio in Palo Alto are passé, but don't tell that to Google co-founder Larry Page. For lunch, the region's ethnic diversity means you're likely to grab a quick meal or go out as a group to an Indian buffet, a Vietnamese noodle house, or a Mexican restaurant; your best options are found on Castro Street in Mountain View.
HOT BARS
Food is a prime factor in after-hours socializing. For beer drinkers (and noise lovers), the choices are between brewpub chains: the Tied House (Mountain View and San Jose) or Gordon Biersch (Palo Alto and San Jose). Wine and martini quaffers head to the bar at Zibbibo's in Palo Alto, then stay for Mediterranean food and local celebrity-gazing. In San Jose, the tri-level Agenda Lounge has something for all comers: live acts upstairs, drinks and grub on the main floor, DJ downstairs.
HOT 'HOODS
Here's where the salaries, stock options, and settlements that lawyers negotiate really come into play. Everyone can enjoy the area's mild weather, but if you want a great view, a good school, or a sizable yard of any quality, you have to pony up big time. When you've got cash to flash, you'll find your stuccoed perch in Los Altos Hills; the discreetly filthy rich prefer Woodside, Atherton, or Saratoga. Palo Alto is big enough to have options for families, young professionals, and graduate students (on generous scholarships), but the most affordable choices in condos and apartments are strung along soulless streets in Mountain View and Sunnyvale.
HOT SHOPPING
While San Jose proper lags in cool places to live, its shopping scene enjoys Santana Row-a completely artificial but nonetheless charming "boulevard" of cafes, restaurants, and upscale chain stores. The outdoor Stanford Shopping Center sprawls next to its namesake university, with more-of-the- same chains, plus department stores, gourmet groceries, and lots of planters in bloom. Kepler's Books in Menlo Park remains the area's premier bookstore, aided by the people-watching and cafe lattes at Cafe Borrone.
