Over the past few months attorneys have been fretting over lack of jobs in the legal sector. While many believe that law firms have almost stopped hiring, a new legal market research conducted by BCG Attorney Search reports that there are signs that the legal market is actually improving. Legal employment opportunities on the BCG Attorney Search website, offers a preview of the seasonally adjusted preliminary data released on 2 August by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that reports 2,800 jobs to have been added in the legal sector in July.
BCG Attorney Search has had law firms like Baker & McKenzie 
posting their attorney job requirements on its job board this year, too. This counters contentions that top-tier firms have almost stopped all hiring. Hiring in law firms has in no way stagnated, but law firms are increasingly recruiting attorneys with substantial hands on work experience because they want to hire talent that falls within their 'star cluster.' This is making it difficult for newly graduated lawyers to break into the market easily if they do not possess some kind of pro bono work. Those with some pro bono work experience are being roped in easily in mid-tier and boutique practices.
Larger law firms have taken up the lateral hiring path. They are also doing selective hiring. Maybe, both these factors have made their recruiting efforts seem slow-paced. Harrison Barnes, Chief Executive Officer at BCG Attorney Search says, "Lateral hiring is picking up greatly in cities like Chicago, Dallas, New York and Philadelphia among large firms." This trend in hiring is specifically gaining momentum incorporate and litigation practice areas. Latest BCG Attorney Search's job search data confirms this. It shows 689 active corporate legal jobs and 483 new opportunities for litigation attorneys in all.
