"Do you have any suggestions for us who just want to work in a legal job that is a non law firm job? What is the best way to search for a non law firm job? Thank you for all you do."
That's a good question. Attorneys have all sorts of skills and there's no reason that you need to work in a law firm. Attorneys have skills in marketing, they have skills in writing, they have sales skills, they tend to have research skills, they have all sorts of skills. When I got into what I'm doing now, I actually liked doing recruiting because I liked the fact that it took advantage of marketing skills, writing, sales, research, and other types of skills, and then business skills, all these sorts of things. So that's why I liked it, but attorneys have different types of skills.
There's this kind of cool test here that I like. It's called 16 personalities and it's actually free and it will show you the type of personality that you are and the kind of things and jobs that you could be good at. So I took it and I came out as the advocate. This talks about standing up for what's right, connecting others, and a personal mission. It's fun. So you take this test and then it tells you the things you're good at. And what's good about the test is that it's based on very popular tests.
It can show you the things that you're likely to do well. And then you can give you a sense of what you're good at because not everybody is fit to be an attorney. Some people are fit to be an attorney, but are just in the wrong practice area. Other people are fit to be an attorney but maybe not in a law firm. And taking this test is a great idea. I would suggest a test like this. There's also other tests called DISC profiles and all sorts of things, but this is a good test and I like it, and I recommend taking a test like this because it can many times give you ideas of what you want. Typically, the way you figure out the type of job you want is you think back on things and experiences that you've had in the past, which are maybe classes you've taken that you've liked, things you've done in the past where you feel like you're skilled and everything clicks for you.
Honestly, the only practice area I ever liked was tax. I never was a tax attorney, I actually liked litigation too but I thought tax was very interesting. I understood it instinctively. And sometimes people understand things instinctively, sometimes people are good at certain sports instinctively. Anywhere you have a natural skill or something appeals to your personality type, you'd probably do well. I definitely would recommend taking a test like that. And that will tell you the things you're good at.
