"Are the various search engines connected or networked to each other in a way that they share data on candidates with other search engines or employers?"
No, they're not. Almost every job search engine is a private employer, with the exception of maybe usajobs.gov, which is just government, and some states search engines. A lot of state bar websites for you would be the same company running in the back end, but other than that, no, they're all, they pretty much are all the same. You don't need to worry too much about that. They're all independent, and they don't share data. They do sell access to the data, but they don't connect.
They'll always opt out from your current employer being able to see your resume, but they don't share data. They do things like cookie resumes, and cookie you as a visitor, so they know if you're visiting a new one, they may tag you with ads on other sites, so if somebody knows you're like a litigation attorney in Memphis, then they may tag you with litigation jobs in Memphis, a search engine that knows that based on you giving them the resume. But that's all I'm aware of at this point. I'm sure it'll get more sophisticated with future.
