How Not To Come Across As Too Desperate
[00:00:00] I received a sort of verbal offer weeks ago and have received not anything in writing yet.
The verbal offer didn't contain specifics but seemed like a done deal. How long is the follow-up on this?
You need to just go all out, trying to track something else down if you don't receive anything from the firm, I would go back to them and just say, Hey, I have another offer at this place.
Are you still interested? You need to be independent. Sometimes when people make verbal offers they do it without thinking. If it was a sort of verbal offer, I would be very aggressive going after other things. And then when you come back to them, you'll come back as strength.
No one wants to hire someone that needs them. So, everybody, every law firm wants to feel that they've wooed you to some extent and that you're a valuable commodity. Just like if somebody throws himself at you in the dating scene or wants to be your friend, even if they're the most desirable person. You're not going to be interested in them. I had something funny happen when I was in high school. There was a girl that became a fairly famous actress and she was pursuing one of my friends and he didn't have girls like him and she was a very [00:01:00] beautiful girl and ultimately he didn't like her just because she was interested in him.
A lot of times it's like that with firms, if a firm thinks you're too interested in them and you don't have other options then they're not going to be as interested in you. So it's just something to remember when you're looking for a job that you need to be alert that if you come across as too desperate, then the law firms gonna think there's something wrong with you.
So you need to, act as you want them, but at the same time, if you do, if you are approaching them, you need to do so from a position of strength. And that means going and getting as many interviews and offers as you can, and telling the law firm, I have all these other offers or interviews.
