Being Choosy With Work Assignments Could Jeopardize Your Career
[00:00:00] How does want carefully deal with receiving certain undesirable work assignments more often than occasionally? I'm specifically referring to patent prosecution office actions that are very difficult to overcome where partners, refuse to bill out to their clients or even tell them the bad news. Basically, such work as an attorney/agent to make up some fake argument, lying, and wait for luck, and the better you're at your skills, more difficult that was going to make those up.
Wow. If you're asked to lie, that is not good.
I would look for another job. I don't know if it's actually a liar. It's a kind of bad fake arguments, what you're saying. But yeah, that's how I would deal with that.
I would be very careful. Sometimes there are certain types of work that no one likes doing, as part of a job. And I think that the best way to get around that is to realize that a career is a long thing. If you're young and you're in your thirties, you could be working as an attorney for the next 50 years. Just realize that, you're at the point where all of this stuff will pass, and you may be doing work assignments that you don't like right now, but things will change in the future. And, that's really the best way. I think a lot of times people get themselves in trouble early in their careers by turning [00:01:00] down work and not doing certain types of work that they don't want to do.
If you do that, you can lose your job and you can actually throw your career on a bad trajectory. I've seen a lot of people do that by not doing the work. You need to be pleasant and thankful for assignments and do the best you can when you're young. I hate to say it, but that's just how it is.
Partners you're working for are really just trying to make, money and keep their firms going. They're dealing with all sorts of stresses, so, just be happy for the work and do it. And as long as you're not doing anything wrong. I think you're okay. This stuff will pass. It's like that in all practice areas and, corporate, it could be due diligence and litigation discovery. There's all sorts of things.
