Why Law Firms Actually Care About You
[00:00:00] I know that employers are looking people who will stick with it, but from the outside, it seems like large firms really didn't seem to care much if associates plan to be there for the long haul. Do large law firms really care about how long associates intend to stay when they are hiring?
Yes, they do. But the thing is, law firms in this day and age, look at, if you leave, it's just a cost of doing business, and they're frustrated. But, large law firms do want you to stay. It's actually very good for their clients, and they'll put you in higher and more important roles. The more likely they think you are staying, you'll work with more important partners in your work on more important matters. And, you'll be closer to the action because they don't like turnovers. And, because it actually costs their clients money when you're getting up to speed and doesn't look good, law firms do want you to stay as long as they need you. As your billing rates get higher, you'll be more competitive with partners and there are all sorts of issues related to that.
Law firms definitely want you to stay. They do care about you, how long you'll stay when they're hiring and they want you to stay. The problem is, they're so frustrated, people leave so much, they often do become a personal thing, they believe that you'll leave. But, they do care about how that goes today.
Something that was interesting to me. [00:01:00] When I was at a firm, I remember it was at a cocktail party. And, one of the associates was making fun of one of the partners. He knows what makes partner here. And, the partner said, because everyone leaves, all you need to do to be partner, is to to stay. If you stayed, you make partner, which I thought was funny. And, it's probably true.
Once you leave, then everything's off the table. But, if you stay, you have a lot better options.
