How to Get the Job By Looking the Part
[00:00:00] I want to get a career in Healthcare Law / Policy / Compliance, but it's hard to find an opportunity. Please give me some advice on how to get into these roles ASAP.
Okay. So, a couple of things about these types of jobs. When you're applying for any type of job, your resume needs to show that you look like you could be a good fit for it.
What that means basically, is your resume needs to have a sense of someone who looks like a healthcare attorney. If you don't look like a healthcare attorney, then a healthcare law firm or someone with that kind of opening has no reason to bring you in.
So is there anything in your background? Have you written things? Have you taken an LLM? Have you taken courses? What is it about your background that shows you look like a good healthcare law/policy/ compliance attorney? these are three things by the way. So I'm hoping you meet a healthcare attorney that does policy and compliance-related work, in the healthcare industry.
If you have that experience, all you need to do is research and find boutiques. Find other law firms and different markets. But, do that work to work.[00:01:00] And, once you find that, then you can you're are in business. You need to find places that do that. And if you find places that do that, then you're going to be in good shape. But, the first thing is, your resume needs to have a scent, like, you are a good fit for this, or you need to get in the door somehow.
So, you can do it. Sometimes, people can't get a job in a firm right away doing that. So, that would be mean, you could take a government job, in a market, where you can get experience.
You could get an LLM. You can do a variety of things. I don't know what those would be exactly. But you could take a government job, public interest job, just do something where you can get that related experience. And that's really and then you could research once you do get that. A fine boutique is another place that does that or you can just get into a law firm that does that.
That's and then transition, and then move to larger and larger firms.
This is a good question and I do have some experience placing people coming out of LLM programs, in big law firms, without any direct experience doing that type of work.
There are not a [00:02:00] lot of attorneys in this practice area but It's a very good practice area to go into.
