How to Get the Role You Want
[00:00:00] I'm a fifth year of M&A, VC associate at a V30 with roughly 80, 20 split of that work and a solid background in finance.
In the ideal world, I'm in-house to the job that has:
- better hours, I'm young, without kids so I'm fine with not having a true nine to five, but would like an improvement from law firm life
- a mix of M&A and VC work
- uses outside counsels for most deals
- is near New York City or open to remote work
- allows for meaningful upward mobility
- provides not too much of a pay cut.
How likely is it that I can find this?
I think you can definitely can find this role. I see resumes like this all the time. They typically work at VC firms, things like that but I don't think it's going to be that difficult for you to find a position like that. Something I recommend too, is just researching. The big thing that everyone should understand is, when you're trying to find a position, the idea that success leaves clues. And, anytime you're looking for someone to do something and you want to do a similar job to someone, it's always important to realize that there's other people that have done what you want. So, looking at other [00:01:00] firms that are doing something similar are people that are doing what you want to do, is useful.
I've seen resumes like yours all the time. They typically would move to private equity firms and that sort of thing and work there. And, enjoy themselves doing that.
The other thing too, people will do in your role. And this is just a fun thing is sometimes, I'll go to business school just cause they want to get more exposed to this stuff. I don't think you need to do that, but that can also be a fun way to transition to a lot of those companies, but I think it's very likely you can find a job like that. I think you need to look in the right place. So again, I would recommend many times, researching the firms that may have a need like that and cold contacting them can be very useful.
