Can I be a Patent Attorney Without Taking the Bar Exam
[00:00:00] What other types of legal areas besides being a patent attorney require skill specific bar exam? Is state bar admission prerequisite of taking these specific bar exams?
I think you can actually be a patent agent if you go to law school and never take the state bar exam. In order to be a patent attorney, you do need to take the bar exam.
I think to call yourself a patent attorney, you would probably need to take the bar, but no, a lot of times people take the patent bar away before they take the bar exam. Then they just take the bar exam in order to become a patent attorney.
And if you're a patent agent, because you're practicing federal law, it depends on the firm, but you could take an easy bar exam. Don't quote me on this, cause I don't want to give anybody advice it's wrong, but if you're only practicing federal law and you're only practicing patent law and that's all federal, you can take the easiest bar exam that you wanted to in any other state and then practice patent, but I'm not a hundred percent sure that's not my area of expertise, but I think a lot of people do.
