How to Justify a Resume Gap on Account of a Maternity Leave During Interviews
[00:00:00] I worked for several years in big firms but in my last firm, the market was so bad, I was asked to leave. I eventually left on maternity leave and didn't return. After five years, I tried looking for a job in a firm again, and unable to return to a firm, I began teaching law for two years. I managed to get an interview with a law firm. What would you recommend I say to explain away the gaps in my resume to show that I'm serious about working in a firm again?
Okay. I think you're okay. You said you tried looking for a job in a firm again but were unable to return to a firm. You're saying the same thing that I was saying in this call today. people don't typically look hard enough.
Now I, in terms of your resume gap all you have to say is,
I had kids and I wanted to spend some time at home. And then I got this job teaching law because it gave me some flexibility in my schedule and now I want to work again.
See, you need to make sure that you fix all this stuff or, you make it clear that the big thing is just time off for children.
That's great. For children, five years is okay. You want to raise your kids until they're in grade school. [00:01:00] Now, I want full-time. And it sounds are you were working in big firms, so now want full-time. I want a real job again. So all these things are fine. You, just make sure that the law firms understand that this is what you want now. And with that you should be fine.
People do not care if you take time off, there's nothing wrong with taking time off. And for kids, that's very accepted and people do not feel right being discriminated against people for that. They would feel wrong if you were a man doing this.
So I think that's fine. I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all.
My other piece of advice would be applying to as many firms as possible because not everyone is going to like this.
Apply to more firms.
