To Leave or Not to Leave -- Things to Consider if You Were Passed on Promotion
I work with a big law firm. I was passed on promotion for becoming a senior associate. I was the only one who passed them from being promoted. It's been a difficult year due to a personal emergency at home. However, that wasn't the reason cited to me. I believe I should have been promoted all things considered. Yes, there were issues but no red flags, and I improved my performance post-mid-year and annual review. Not becoming promoted apart from being a prestige issue also hurts me monetarily.
Not becoming okay.
Should I switch to other big firms that are offering me a 30% increment and promotion? One issue is that my current firm supported me during my personal emergency and there's that ethical angle sticking around.
They may not have promoted you because of a personal emergency. That's probably what I would say and probably would think about that.
If you're the only person that had it. Yeah. Personal emergency. They may have just used that as an excuse not to promote you. But if you feel that there are some issues, to be a senior associate and then to make partner at a firm is a difficult thing. And if you feel like it, that's much more likely to happen to the people that are around you. And, you've studied everything and believe that my recommendation to you probably would be to look at other firms, but if not, then you certainly can stick around. The 30% raise is good, but it's up to you is my ultimate point, but not getting promoted is not a good thing if everyone else are promoted. I don't know how many people work. But I would think about that. But to me, it sounds just you just didn't get the promotion because you had a personal emergency. You need to take time off and probably you'll get the promotion next year if you do well, but if you think it's something else, then I probably would look at jobs and only, if you've been there for a long time, then that's also another reason to stay.
