Why it's Crazy to Think that Your Law School is Holding You Back
I decided not to go to law in part because of the job prospects for non-T20 folk. I keep hearing about there being an oversupply of attorneys, we don't need anymore.
Maybe it was wrong for me to end the journey so soon because I find the law fascinating, but my understanding is that actually, legal practice is unpleasant.
Based on your experiences is true. So I had an interesting experience. So I was, I dunno, about three or four years ago, I was taking these acting classes and of course, I'm not an actor but this teacher kept telling me like, you're going to be famous.
You're going to do well. And then, sure enough, I started meeting famous casting people and they started saying similar stuff to me as well. And it didn't make any sense to me. Now, I'm not doing that anymore, but when I asked the guy, why do you think I'm so good at this?
He said you are good at it because you're studying it. And you're learning everything you possibly can about it. And you're taking it very seriously. Generally, someone who's successful doing one thing will always be successful doing something else, meaning, you know what I'm doing with you today, talking to you.
I throw myself into it and in everything I do, I throw myself into it. It doesn't matter where you go to law school to be a successful attorney. If you throw yourself into it, you can be successful. It doesn't matter that maybe I could have been a great actor. Who the hell knows. But be the point is, if I'd thrown myself into it, I probably would have been okay. At least been able to make a living doing it. And it's like that with law schools, I know plenty of people that went to the worst law schools in the country and do very well. Just because you're not working in a large law firm is insane. There's no reason not to practice law because you didn't go to a T20 law school.
That's just ridiculous.
If you like it and there are things about the idea of practicing law that appeal to you, then you should do it. I know people that come out of law school and are having the best careers imaginable. Very successful and doing very well.
Those people are successful because they throw themselves into it and that's what you need to do. It's not your law school, honestly, does not matter. It doesn't matter. It matters if you want to work with the biggest law firms, but, if you're trying to do something and you have the passion for whatever you're trying to do on your own, it's crazy to think of the law school should hold you back.
Mark Zuckerberg didn't finish college. Who didn't, bill Gates didn't finish college. There's just, you can do all this. You can become an attorney and do very well without going to the best law school, all the tons of people do, I think it's crazy to worry about the quality of your law school.
Just because you're not getting a lot of praise from people or getting into the best law schools is ridiculous.
You may have other important skillsets. Think about all these people that make money on social media. There are a lot of them that live around me. Kim Kardashian and all these kinds of people like that made billions of dollars.
And they're certainly not the kind of people that were great students in school. They have other skills, they have social skills. And so everybody, if you don't go to a great law school, you probably have other skills as well. No one should measure themselves based on where they went to law school.
And many times, I think not going to a big law school can be a huge blessing for people. People are held back by the law school and what they believe they should be doing. A big firm just means you're working in a big firm.
