The most significant way to become an associate that partners like you can give more work is to work hard on their assignments, not to question the need for the work.
You may be researching something and need to explain it in great detail. Partners, a lot of times, don't like that. You could give them a 20-page memo, worked on for four weeks, and they could look at it in five minutes and the conclusions without spending a lot of time.
You don't need to explain things in much detail, even though it seems that important to you. To become liked by the partners, you must seem open to taking work. Often, they'll note that if they call you, give you, and ask you to do something, you'll do it.
So they like that. They like it when they see you prioritize their work. People like to feel important. So that's one thing, but doing an excellent job on the work is essential. Being enthusiastic is important. Enthusiasm for working with that person. Make the person believe that you like them, that you're grateful for getting the work, and that you're excited to be working there.
