Some law firms will not give it. A lot of times, they will give it only if you sign a release. But yes, you do have to ask for severance. I think there's a lot of fear of people that they have of employers and other things, but if you have relied on someone's representations, you can ask for severance.
One of the things I would say to anybody that's fired. If you've been practicing for any length of time, meaning five plus years or ten plus years, most attorneys at some point get fired or asked to leave or give them the idea that they're not going to have a future there. It doesn't matter what firm you're at, it's just this is what happens, and people can be fired for all sorts of reasons.
