Criminal law doesn't have to be your area of focus. If you like criminal law, that's a great practice area. It's one practice area that tends to do well in recessions and all economic climates. It's pretty interesting for many people, and they like it. You can have a lot of employment stability if you like arguing and different personalities and kinds of excitement.
It can be fun if your current employer provides outstanding mentorship. But there needs to be more work. So there are certain practice areas where you can leave and go to the public sector and return to a law firm because criminal law involves the government, and you can do that there. But in most practice areas, say commercial litigation, and then you want to go back to criminal law, that won't happen. So you have to be pretty careful about doing criminal law.
